- READ MORE: What your ice cream style says about your personality
Previously an iconic fixture of summer evenings across America, the ice cream truck has largely vanished—sacrificed to evolving preferences, stricter rules, and the surge in food delivery platforms.
Currently, a New Jersey-based startup is bringing back this custom with a modern update—enabling clients to request sugary delights anytime through text messages.
Scream Truck operates 17 vans across select neighborhoods in the state, alerting fans when they're nearby and letting them reserve a stop with a simple 'Y.'
It’s a far cry from the old-school trucks that were a beloved fixture of American neighborhoods from the 1950s through the early 1990s.
The company has big plans to expand nationally, aiming to roll out 1,000 trucks within five years.
Each truck ditches the old-school jingle for 'actual music,' blasts bright LED graphics, and serves up seasonal sundaes, shakes, and cones — many dreamed up by founder and CEO Eric Murphy himself , who calls it a 'really fun part of the job.'
'Murphy explained to World News that their business strategy revolves around spontaneous purchases, notifying customers via text when Scream Truck will be touring their area.'
Customers can easily confirm a delivery stop at their home by replying with Y (for yes!). Can anyone refuse an SMS about getting ice cream?
In 2020, Murphy founded the company following the sale of his earlier businesses to Condé Nast in 2017. Despite having minimal experience with ice cream, he leveraged his extensive history in experiential marketing to develop an innovative concept.
He stated, 'Over my 30-year career in experiential marketing and entertainment, I've always envisioned launching an entirely new type of food delivery experience.'
'Delivery services for food have grown into a giant industry (particularly since the pandemic began), yet the overall customer experience tends to be quite poor.'
It was then that he opted to launch a food truck with an innovative approach, offering treats through text message orders from his clients.
Everything driving the Scream Truck experience operates on IMPLSE, a custom logistics system created by the firm.
'The Scream Truck, along with our customer experience and logistics software, are laying the groundwork for an extensive project aimed at bringing 'unexpected delights' of food and beverages directly to people’s doorsteps,' he explained.
Nevertheless, the firm is crafting exclusive products via collaborations with partners to produce unique delicacies, and has additionally launched its inaugural pizza truck concept.
"We are focusing on high-end brands that aren’t widely available, such as Pat LaFrieda and Levain Cookies, along with treats crafted by renowned chefs across the nation," Murphy disclosed.
In the past half-decade, over 100,000 people have enrolled for notifications.
It concluded the year 2024 with almost $4 million in revenue, marking a 25 percent growth compared to its sales figures from 2023.
As its popularity rises, Scream Truck is taking a step back to enhance its technological capabilities and ready itself for a national rollout.
We have recently sealed the deal for Las Vegas, where they will roll out their initial truck sometime this summer, with plans to introduce between 10 to 15 more trucks within the coming 18 months," Murphy stated. "It’s an ideal setting for Scream Truck.
The enterprise will similarly expand into the tri-state region encompassing Long Island and Florida.
Scream Truck also aims to expand into major hospitality and entertainment hubs such as Los Angeles, Austin, Nashville, Miami, and Denver.
Even though the company is thriving, the CEO announced that they won’t be adding any new owned and operated trucks to their present routes.
Scream Truck anticipates only moderate revenue increases for this year but predicts enormous sales expansion beginning in 2026.
In addition to expansions, Scream Truck gave a preview of the promotional initiatives it intends to introduce this year.
Murphy revealed the business is working on a partnership with a 'very big slasher franchise' for Halloween and will bring back its fan-favorite 'Santa Social's' special this winter.
Some items included in its Santa-themed special are holiday music, a holiday menu, and hot chocolate.
Other specials and discounts will be revealed at later dates on Scream Truck's Instagram and Facebook pages.
