China's Dominance in Global Ethylene Capacity Expansion Through 2030

Lagos — China is poised to lead the global ethylene capacity additions By 2030, this sector is projected to capture over 36%, owing to anticipated increases in both the consumption and production of ethylene within the nation, as reported by GlobalData, a prominent provider of data and analysis solutions.

According to GlobalData’s recent report titled "Ethylene Market Analysis and Forecast by Products, Capacity Additions, Leading Nations, and Ongoing and Future Projects up to 2030," it indicates that the aggregate planned and announced ethylene capacity additions in China will likely reach approximately 33.30 million tonnes per year (mtpa) by the year 2030.

Nivedita Roy, an oil and gas analyst at GlobalData, remarks: "China's substantial increase in ethylene capacity can be linked to various elements such as considerable spending on petrochemical facilities and strong economic expansion. The growing number of people in China's middle class along with ongoing industrial progress significantly boosts the demand for ethylene-derived items spanning from everyday commodities to building supplies."

In order to address the increasing demand for ethylene, China intends to boost its production capabilities. Consequently, the nation’s ethylene output is expected to increase from 36.66 million tons per annum (mtpa) in 2024 to approximately 51.80 mtpa by 2030.

In China, the primary increase in ethylene production capacity will come from the "Shandong Yulong Petrochemical Longkou Ethylene Plant 3," which has an output capability of 5.20 million tons per annum. Situated in Longkou City, this facility is projected to start operations by 2030. The entire ownership lies with Shandong Yulong Petrochemical Co., Ltd., holding a full equity interest in the venture.

The "SABIC Fujian Petrochemical Zhangzhou Ethylene Plant" and the "Huajin Aramco Petrochemical Panjin Ethylene Plant" signify major expansions within China, adding capacities of 1.80 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) and 1.65 mtpa, respectively. These facilities are expected to begin production in 2026.
