A'Ibom Govt Readies Journalists, Engineers, and Experts for the Launch of Ibom Deep Seaport

UYO – In an effort to ready citizens and stakeholders for potential prospects at the planned Ibom Deep Seaport and Ibom Industrial City, the Akwa Ibom State government recently hosted a maritime trade and logistics awareness workshop aimed at journalists and various experts within the region. This event took place over the weekend.

The workshop, held in Uyo, the state capital, was organized by the Ministry of Special Duties and Ibom Deep Seaport in collaboration with Brightfow Logistics Services and the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT). It aimed to showcase the profitable aspects and potential of the maritime trade and logistics industry to participants.

The workshop titled "Unlocking the Economic Potential of the Blue Economy Value Chain in Akwa Ibom State for Enhanced Productivity and Sustainable Development" drew an array of participants such as journalists, members of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR), representatives from civil society organizations (CSOs), architects, engineers, safety experts, and legal professionals.

Establishing the atmosphere, State Commissioner for Special Duties and head of the Ibom Deep Seaport project, Comrade Ini Ememobong stated that these two initiatives are anticipated to generate more than 300,000 employment opportunities throughout their construction period.

According to Ememobong, the surge in maritime activities will turn Akwa Ibom State into a key transport center for Nigeria as well as the West and Central African regions.

He emphasized the potential of the Ibom Deep Seaport, set to become the biggest deep-water port in the area, boasting ten terminals equipped with remarkably long quays measuring 750 meters and 350 meters respectively.

I hear him say, 'This workshop is crucial for capitalizing on the economic prospects presented by the Blue Economy. It’s essential that we prepare our workforce to fully benefit from the opportunities these initiatives will create.'

At present, Lagos and Rivers states dominate the maritime industry due to their seaports. Under the leadership of His Excellency Governor Umo Eno, Akwa Ibom aims to become part of this group with the development of the Ibom Deep Seaport and the Ibom Industrial City.

Even as the state government endeavors to make the Ibom Deep Sea Port and the Ibom Industrial City a reality, Akwa Ibom ought to develop a workforce with advanced skills ready for jobs at the seaport and within the businesses that will establish themselves in the IIC. The purpose behind this morning’s awareness workshop is precisely that.
